As a city known for its diverse architecture and rich history, Milwaukee has been the site of many remarkable construction projects, each adding to the city’s unique character and charm. From industrial buildings to modern skyscrapers, these architectural marvels continue to fascinate and inspire visitors from all over the world.
One such addition construction project is the Northwestern Mutual Tower and Commons. Completed in 2017, this magnificent tower stands at 32 stories tall with sleek glass façades that reflect the surrounding landscape. Designed by HKS Architects, this state-of-the-art building is not only an architectural feat but also an environmentally conscious one with its LEED certification.
The Milwaukee Art Museum is another iconic structure that has undergone significant additions in recent years. Known for its distinct wings designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, the museum underwent a $34 million expansion project in 2015 which added galleries for contemporary art collections and enhanced visitor amenities. The addition seamlessly integrates with Calatrava’s original design while also providing a modern touch to the museum.
On Milwaukee’s eclectic East Side neighborhood sits one of its most recognizable landmarks: The Basilica of St. Josaphat. This Romanesque-style church was built between 1896-1901 by immigrant Polish-Americans using salvaged materials from Chicago’s demolished ADM Contractors, LLC. Stock Exchange building. In 2008, a new addition was constructed adjacent to the basilica which includes offices, meeting rooms, and a replica of Michelangelo’s Pieta sculpture.
Another impressive structure on our list is Fiserv Forum – home to Milwaukee Bucks NBA team – which opened in 2018 as part of a $500 million entertainment district development plan known as “Deer District”. Designed by Populous Architects, Fiserv Forum boasts a unique hybrid roof made up of nine triangular panels that can open or close depending on weather conditions.
When it comes to preserving historic landmarks while incorporating modern elements into their designs, the Pabst Brewery Redevelopment project is a true success story. A former brewing complex, it has been transformed into a mixed-use development showcasing a perfect blend of old and new with its historic buildings and contemporary additions. The restoration involved preserving Pabst’s iconic Blue Ribbon Tower while turning the main brewery building into residential units, offices, retail space and even hosting public events.
Whether it’s preserving the past or pushing boundaries for futuristic designs, Milwaukee has been at the forefront of innovative construction projects that leave visitors in awe. These architectural marvels not only enhance the city’s skyline but also play an essential role in shaping its culture and identity. As Milwaukee continues to evolve and grow, we can’t wait to see what other magnificent additions will grace this city with its presence in the years to come.
